I have been working on the ‘Rocks and Formations’ series for a while now; almost one year. The choice to work on a series keeps me focused and is a great way to realize an idea and to really stay with it.
How did I choose the theme?
It had been on my mind for a long time before I started the series and, in this case, it actually goes back to my childhood. I used to own a big collection of rocks and I also remember that I wanted to see every gem or rock collection that was on display in the area. My parents took us out for hikes on a regular bases and the main thing for me was to have the time to look at rocks, to dig and observe the formations that make up a mountain!
By moving to an area (Lower Similkameen Valley in British Columbia) where I am surrounded by huge boulders, cliffs and rocks, I have my theme in front of me every single day.
How do I create the series?
I can only create what is already in me; it is like the ‘birth’ of something that I have observed in the past and that I have already known. Every single painting and piece has its own story and path and they are all part of the initial idea. Once I start with painting number one, I also initiate the creation of the very next painting and so on. It is like a movie, one picture leads to the next, etc. There is a plan, and most of the time, I know exactly what the next step is going to be.
At the same time, I have to admit that I already have been carrying the ideas for my next two series in my mind for a long time and that I will know exactly when the time comes to start with the new series.
